A beautiful MESS

Standard

Today I’m here to support my fellow blogger Ali Berlinski. She recently wrote a book, a beautiful MESS, about her life, a compilation of comedic personal essay.

Its fun and quirky!

SUMMARY

What’s the point of having a dysfunctional family if it doesn’t give you something to laugh about, or at least a party anecdote? My life has never been ordinary. Biracial, raised bicoastal between two bitterly divorced parents, with a bipolar sister and plausibly a bipolar mother as well, my life covers just about all the bi’s with the exception of bisexual (sorry to disappoint fellows). When you’re born into a family such as mine, having a sense of humor is not so much an asset as a necessary tool for survival. Until 19, arrogant asshole that I am, I believed myself immune to life’s hardships. I had already seen life’s worst and it didn’t scare me. How quickly that all changed once my ex boyfriend died, delivering the first of what would be many reminders that life can be challenging. Eventually, I hit my breaking point, probably when I decided to break up with my celebrity ex-boyfriend, and divorce my mother. Usually, when a girl is heartbroken she gets a terrible haircut, buys a new dress, tries some new diet fad, or a combination of all three. I however, quit my job, moved to Spain, and wrote a book. Allow me to allay your fears; this is not another Eat, Pray, Love. I am not here to spoon feed you another self righteous story about how I traveled to a distant land where I ate a lot, found myself and happiness. Though truthfully, that did all happen. Rather, allow me to tell you the much more interesting back-story of how I came to Spain and the madness that drove me here. A beautiful Mess is a compilation of short stories about life experiences but more importantly relationships. Though the stories are told through my life experiences, the relationships within the book are relationships we all know, have shared and in some cases, have lost. Like everyone else, I am but a product of my relationships. While my life is a mess, it’s a beautiful one, and the only mess I know. I’d be a fool not to love it.

Read a chapter, grab a copy, and for every book you buy, a book is donated to CHARITY!

We Love You Beatles

Standard

We Love You Beatles — a stunning vintage illustrated children’s book from 1971 by Margaret Sutton, best-known for herJudy Bolton mysteries. It tells the story of The Beatles, from their humble Liverpool beginnings to meeting the Queen to the British invasion of America, blending the bold visual language of mid-century graphic design with the vibrant colors of pop art.

“The trees were rocking and the clouds were swaying and the flowers were swinging and the birds were dancing to the Beatles sound. ‘Let’s sing about love and people being happy.’ The Beatles sing songs you can sing in the sunshine. Sing them! Sing the Beatles’ songs!”

More than a charming way to explain who The Beatles were to a kid, We Love You Beatles is a wonderful and visually gripping piece of cultural ephemera from a turning point in the history of both popular music and popular art.

Spin on the Ropes

Standard

20120328-121315.jpg

Full Circle is the first fashion film for new London / Melbourne label Klezinski.

Klezinski makes apparel, accessories, art and interior products utilising sustainable manufacturing processes and materials. This film is a creative collaboration between film-maker Callum Cooper, sound artist John Kassab and Klezinski to showcase hand crafted pieces from their initial collection.

Three people, making themselves spin in a variety of locations. It doesn’t sound impressive, but the camerawork and careful editing on this short film make it an absolutely beautiful piece of footage. Beautiful and slightly vertigo-inducing. You don’t necessarily need headphones to appreciate its greatness, but the sound effects do add an extra layer. Take a spin on the ropes.

Animals Talking in all CAPS

Standard

I’ve fallen hard for the surrealism of Tumblr Animals Talking All In Caps. It features pictures of animals, from cats to tropically hued lizards, and they are talking ALL IN CAPS. The shouty creatures have remarkably human thoughts too.

The Definition of Happiness by Alfred Hitchcock

Standard

20120323-103859.jpg

In this brilliantly wise and articulate short excerpt from an archival interview, the great Alfred Hitchcock shares his definition of happiness.

A clear horizon — nothing to worry about on your plate, only things that are creative and not destructive… I can’t bear quarreling, I can’t bear feelings between people — I think hatred is wasted energy, and it’s all non-productive. I’m very sensitive — a sharp word, said by a person, say, who has a temper, if they’re close for me, haunts me for days. I know we’re only human, we do go in for these various emotions, call them negative emotions, but when all these are removed and you can look forward and the road is clear ahead, and now you’re going to create something — I think that’s as happy as I’ll ever want to be.”

Beautifully said, with a blend of personal vulnerability and firm conviction worthy of profound respect.

A Short History of the Modern Calendar

Since the dawn of civilization, humanity has tried to map and understand time. A cornerstone of these timekeeping efforts is the invention of the calendar, but how exactly did it begin? Jeremiah Warren has put together a brief animated history:

Blooming into gold

Standard

In south-west China’s Yunnan province it produced a stunning vista as rock hillocks peep from a carpet of neon yellow by contrast to the bright blue sky.

20120319-093917.jpg

It’s a stunning transformation that take place every year – the landscape becomes a sea of gold as kilometres of oil crops reach full bloom. Rapeseed bursts into brighty coloured flowers in early spring.

20120319-094112.jpg

20120319-102104.jpg

20120319-094308.jpg

Rapeseed is the seed of the rape or rapeseed plant, a member of the mustard family. Unfortunate associations with the name of this plant aside, rapeseed is actually a major crop in many nations of the world, with the seeds being one of the principal components of the crop, although some cultures also eat the stalks, leaves, and flowers of rapeseed. For those who find the common name “rape” a bit offputting, this plant is also known as oilseed, rapa, rapaseed, or Brassica napus, more formally.

As the name “oilseed” suggests, the seeds of this plant are very high in oil. They can be ground into nutritious meal used in animal fodder, or pressed for the oil, which can be used for human food or in the production of biodiesel. Rapeseed greens are also popular in Asia, where they are eaten like other members of the Brassica genus, in a variety of dishes. Like other Brassicas, the greens have a slightly peppery bite.

20120319-102050.jpg

The United States, Canada, India, Australia, and European Union also grow rapeseed.
