London 2012: The Opening Ceremony by Pictures

Standard

20120730-121359.jpg

2012 Summer Olympics kicked off with a huge Opening Ceremony in London’s new Olympic Stadium, an event watched on television by an estimated 1 billion viewers. Performances paid tribute to British heritage and culture, from agrarian beginnings through pop culture successes like the Beatles and J.K. Rowling. Contingents from more than 200 nations marched in the athletes parade, and the evening was capped off by the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, a performance by Paul McCartney, and a huge fireworks display. Collected below is just a glimpse ceremony, as the 2012 Olympics are now underway.

Olympic Vermin

Standard

20120727-120822.jpg

Olympic Vermin is a short film made by London-based animation company Beakus. It follows a community of urban animals carrying their version of the Olympic torch (which starts off a cigarette and ends up a sparkler) through the capital’s rubbish-strewn streets. Traversing roads, canals and even the tube, this is a clever, witty comment on the concept of Olympic inclusivity.

London 2012 Olympics by numbers

Standard

20120727-104559.jpg

It’s here. The greatest show on Earth.

Seven years ago, Dame Kelly Holmes and Steve Cram bounced around Trafalgar Square upon hearing the news that London had been awarded the Olympic Games.

And now the time has come. Things came full circle yesterday when the Olympic torch was welcomed to Trafalgar Square by thousands of people.

A winning start for Great Britain’s women’s football team and a Korean flag foul-up aside, the Games begin properly tonight with the opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

Film director Danny Boyle’s vision for the event may have looked like the set of Postman Pat when it was unveiled in model form last month, but reports from the dress rehearsals have been positive. Amazingly in this technological age, the event has become the best kept secret in Britain.

Tonight’s ceremony will set in motion more than two weeks of sporting action. Medals will be won, records will be broken, tears will be shed, toys will be thrown out of the pram and the sun will shine. Okay, perhaps one of those things cannot be guaranteed.

Away from the track, the field, the pool and the arenas, other questions will be answered too. After weeks of criticism of the handling of Olympic security, will things run smoothly? Will London’s transport system cope with one million extra people?

Whatever happens over the next few weeks, the world will be watching.

Let the Games begin.

Realistic Body Art

Standard

20120725-120913.jpg

Japanese art student Chooo-San, aged 19, uses only acrylic paint and her incredible talent to transform herself into a mutant or cyborg. Multiple mouths, six eyes or even batteries protruding from her forearms – these are just a few examples of what she can do with a human body.

Everything began when Chooo-San was studying for university admission exams. She would draw eyes and other objects on her hands while taking breaks from her studies.

Finally, she took her hobby a step further and created a portfolio of her realistic body paintings. The results look incredibly promising.

The Brandalism Project

Standard

20120720-135048.jpg

In the UK alone, there are over 100,000 large scale billboards currently on display. While many of these gigantic ads are entertaining and engaging, there are many who would rather not be shouted at from every corner about something they “should” want or “should” be. Enter the Brandalism project.

Inspired by the guerilla art of the 20 th Century along with the Dadaists, Situationist and Street Art movements, the UK based crew behind the work you see here have hit 33 billboards in 5 cities, repasting them with subversive art and graphics which comment on our consumer culture. The massive project is the result of 8 months of work and planning, followed by an advert plastering road trip through the country; editing and developing on the fly.

In placing these subversive pieces the group is actively reclaiming outdoor space while challenging the authority and legitimacy of the advertising industry. In the process their work acts as a bold, controversial and thought provoking demonstration which will certainly spark plenty of conversation about how we want our cities, towns and countryside to look.

The collaborative project, which takes its name from little known writer Sean Tejaratchi and subsequently Banksy’s latest book ‘Wall & Piece’, sees 25 artists from 8 countries coming together to share their talents in such diverse disciplines as street art, graffiti, illustration, political art, photo montage and culture jamming. Further help for the project came from representatives in the arts, community, activists, third sector and academic networks… making this one very well organized and supported project.

Expect more in the near future as the group works towards their goal of reclaiming 50 billboards.
You can find out more at brandalism.org.uk.
